The plans

Designed around how our students play.

“Children learn through doing – play is how they explore the world, learn to assess risk, try things out, and get to know themselves.”

The students of Soaring Eagle Academy benefit in a multitude of ways from being outdoors and engaged in semi-structured play with peers. The playground committee has partnered with Play Illinois and BCI Burke, a playground consultant, to design the playgrounds that will support our students, their learning, and bring the SEA curriculum outside of the classroom.

The designed playgrounds

  • Provide enclosed spaces to explore safely and promote independence.
  • Support regulation and levels of arousal through play-based movement and sensory experiences.
  • Support higher development in Functional Emotional Developmental Levels.
  • Promote exploration of movement and increased motor skills through outdoor play.
    • The hill with a slide to support movement on slant surface.
    • The climbing structure with a variety of climbing options with motor planning and stability kept in mind.
    • Visual path to support movement around the playground between areas.
  • Support Interactions in a multi-sensory environment.
    • With peers and Staff.
    • With locations and equipment for students to engage together in play.
  • Offer a large, open space to facilitate group games in recess, PE, or outside academic activities.
  • Provide opportunities for sensory enrichment.
